FAQ's

Why a sailing academy? Because of controversy on reasons for global warming. Need for more coordinated research on environmental issues. Better coverage of Globe at the given time.

Why new vessels and not a charter? We need customised purpose-built design. Quarters for 36 trainees, lecture theatre, classrooms, laboratories, exhibition hall etc. This is also an investment proposition – vessels will be built by non-profit shipyards and sponsors will receive shares in the yard.

Why seven vessels? This is going to be floating university. Seven vessels will give a large capacity and they will better cover the research areas.

Why square rigged 60m LOA riggers rather than 10-20m sloops? This will better capacity, better scientific research facilities, better seaworthiness, tougher sailing training.

Who will own the vessels? Vessels will be owned by the Trust.

Who will own the yard? The sponsors will hold a majority share in the shipyard.

Why a new shipyard and not an existing one? For construction of these vessels the yard is going to be a non-profit organisation. Only “sustainability fee” of 5.5% will be added to the cost of the vessel.

What are the sponsor’s duties and privileges? Sponsors will not have any responsibilities but will have some privileges. Separate contracts will be negotiated with each sponsor, taking into consideration their requirements, wishes and expectations.
